Myopia can have a significant impact on a child’s academic performance. For instance, studies have shown that children with uncorrected myopia scored 20% lower on reading tests compared to their peers with normal vision.

Research suggests that many children may not be aware that their vision is impaired. A study found that about 60% of children with uncorrected refractive errors were not aware that they had a vision problem!

Binocular vision dysfunction has been shown to adversely affect academic performance in children. A study found that nearly 30% of children with reading difficulties had some form of binocular dysfunction, leading to decreased reading efficiency and comprehension.

Studies indicate that up to 20-30% of individuals with myopia may also have some form of binocular dysfunction like convergence insufficiency, which can exacerbate visual discomfort and academic difficulties.

The M!CK System

Myopia Integrated Care for Kids (MICK) is a comprehensive process dedicated to managing and preventing myopia in children. The process is organized into systematic stages, with each child undergoing these at regular intervals (every three months):

  1. Assessment: The child goes through several key evaluations.
    • Annual Binocular Vision Screening: This helps diagnose any binocular vision anomalies such as Strabismus (Crossed Eyes) or Amblyopia (Lazy Eye), and Dysfunctions like Convergence Insufficiency.
    • Quarterly Refractive Errors Analysis: Regular checks are made for refractive errors like Myopia/Hyperopia, Astigmatism, and Anisometropia.
    • Semiannual Ocular Axial Length Measurement: This involves monitoring the growth of the eye length to identify any irregular or excessive growth and compare it with the average growth in the child’s age group.
  2. Diagnosis: Based on the assessments, the child’s binocular vision health is evaluated, any refractive errors are identified, and the rate of eye elongation is determined.
  3. Management: This includes routine reviews and specific interventions as needed, such as prescription glasses, Orthokeratology (a process using special contact lenses to reshape the cornea), or Atropine co-management (the use of Atropine eye drops to slow down myopia progression).
  4. Referral: If additional specialist intervention is required, the child may be referred for further analysis and co-management. This could include vision therapy, or co-management of conditions such as Amblyopia or Strabismus.

The MICK process ensures regular monitoring and proactive management of a child’s vision, offering personalized care for each child’s unique needs. The goal is to effectively manage myopia and related conditions, promoting healthier vision for children in their growing years.

About Us

Born out of a shared vision to combat the escalating issue of myopia in children, Myopia Integrated Care for Kids (MICK) was established by a team of experienced optometrists who understood that effective myopia management was about more than just prescribing glasses. Recognizing myopia as a multifaceted condition, much like diabetes or hypertension, they saw the need for a more comprehensive and proactive approach.

Our founders brought together years of extensive experience and deep knowledge in optometry, coupled with a passion for children’s eye health. They realized the profound impact that early and effective myopia management could have on a child’s life – from their academic success to their self-esteem and future opportunities.

This understanding led to the formation of our mission: to significantly reduce the prevalence of high myopia in children through a comprehensive management and prevention approach. At MICK, we are devoted to offering solutions that are not only effective but also rooted in scientific evidence and ethical practices.

Every day, we strive to ‘keep it real’, providing genuine care and personalized treatment plans for every child we serve. Our practices are guided by a commitment to ‘do no harm’, ensuring we always act in the best interest of our young patients. We also place a high emphasis on contributing to our environment and community, understanding that a healthier future for our children goes beyond their vision.

At MICK, our commitment extends beyond mere management of myopia. We believe in empowering children and their parents with knowledge, fostering an understanding of the condition, its implications, and the different ways it can be managed. We envision a future where every child has the opportunity to enjoy clear vision, and every parent feels confident and supported in this journey.

This is our story. It is one of dedication, passion, and a relentless pursuit of transforming children’s vision health. We invite you to be a part of this journey. Welcome to MICK.
